Recorded Fragment: The Uncatalogued Shelf
During the ninth-hour rotation, Cataloguer Aethren reported a shelf on Sublevel VII that does not appear in any inventory. The shelf was full. The records upon it were current. The ink was still drying.
This is not possible. The Archive holds every record that has ever been. It does not hold records that are not yet. Nothing is written here before it happens. Nothing is written here that the world has not already lost.
The shelf held promises. Aethren recognized the format: ledger-bound, frost-sealed, the promise-keeping of the lower archive. But every seal was unbroken, and every promise was one he has not yet made. In at least one case, the hand was not his.
Aethren has requested a full recount of Sublevel VII. The Archive grants the request. The record of the request is already on the shelf. It is dated for tomorrow.
Hvert faera mistu minni? The question is inscribed on the shelf's underside, in a hand older than the Archive itself. Where do lost memories go? The shelf appears to know. It is not yet willing to say.
Ekkert fölnar í frosti. Nothing decays in the frost. The inventory does not lie. One of these statements is now under review.
