Recorded Fragment: The Name Beneath the Frost

The seventh bell did not sound. It was heard.

At the northern threshold, the frost withdrew from the stone in a shape resembling handwriting. The mark was not an inscription. It was the absence left after one had been removed.

Kaelen arrived before the wardens. He carried no lamp. The corridor knew him and opened, though the record states that Kaelen had never entered the northern threshold.

Inside, twelve shelves stood empty. A thirteenth held one object: a silver bone cuff, warm to the touch and wet with meltwater. No memory was attached to it. This was the first error.

The Archive permitted examination for four minutes. At the fifth, the corridor began returning names. Some belonged to the dead. One belonged to Kaelen. One belonged to the person writing this account.

The account ends here because the writer has been instructed to forget the door. The instruction remains legible. The forgetting does not.
